Keir Mathews (he/him)
My approach to therapy is holistic, grounded in the understanding that mental health and wellbeing is shaped by many interconnected factors. Alongside emotional and psychological wellbeing, I consider the influence of social context, support networks, physical health, and our sense of meaning and belonging within family, community, and society. For some people, this may also include spiritual or existential dimensions, such as religious beliefs or a broader sense of purpose.
In addition to my private practice, I provide supervision to other therapists working in private practice, and clinicians working out of NGOs and Public Health services.
When I am not working, I enjoy time with my family, gardening, bushwalking, and I love getting out of town when I can.
Relevant experience and qualifications
I have always been drawn to work that centres on people and community. My early career was grounded in community-based settings, including Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) rehabilitation, disability care and housing and homelessness services. These roles shaped my belief in compassionate, practical, and person-centred support.
I returned to university as a mature-age student and completed a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) at RMIT and Griffith University. I undertook a research placement at Tandem Mental Health Carer’s Support Network, and a clinical placement at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where I worked alongside individuals and families navigating complex health and emotional challenges.
I have since worked across a range of clinical and mental health settings, including:
Cabrini Health - a general hospital role, predominantly on the geriatric ward, supporting patients and families transitioning to aged care
NorthWestern Mental Health - case management and senior clinician roles within the Crisis Assessment Team (CATT) and Substance Use and Mental Illness Treatment Team
The Royal Melbourne Hospital - teaching roles within the Mental Health Training and Development Unit, where I developed and delivered training for clinical staff, including Dual Diagnosis, Motivational Interviewing and Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) treatment pathways
