Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD)
My early clinical experience was in AOD rehabilitation, and I later worked in Substance Use and Mental Illness Treatment and Crisis Assessment services.
I've worked extensively with people where substance use is connected with anxiety, depression, trauma or other mental health concerns. This experience continues to inform how I approach addiction, without judgement and with an understanding that change isn't always straightforward.
Concerns I often work with
Alcohol
Illicit drugs
Prescription medication
Nicotine
Patterns of use that are becoming difficult to manage
I also provide an outreach service to rehabilitation facilities.
The focus isn't simply on whether you're using a substance. We can also look at what the substance is doing for you, what's happening around the use and what you'd like to be different.
I use Motivational Interviewing, working with where you're at rather than pushing you towards a particular outcome.
My approach can also include harm reduction. Abstinence isn't the only possible goal. We can work towards whatever is safer or more manageable use means for you.
